Yummy Dumplings: Hold the Spin is really fun both visually and audibly. The graphics almost feel like you’re sitting in a friendly Japanese restaurant, or ‘shokudo’ yourself. With a carved wood opening looking out into a street and a friendly customer sitting eating his dumplings, it’s highly immersive. The upbeat Asian music also adds to the atmosphere.

The game grid looks like a traditional menu board, with an intricate carved dumpling surrounded by dragons at the top and an overhanging lantern. The lanterns sway in the light breeze, so does the customer order pinned to the left wall. 

The customer is my favourite graphic, though, as he looks mouth-open in anticipation when you’re close to landing the bonus. He also dances and snips his chopsticks together in celebration when you complete a row in the bonus game.

There are four low paying symbols (Ace, King, Queen and Jack) plus four medium paying symbols made up of various Japanese dishes such as ramen and sushi. The highest paying symbols are the Chef and the Wild which substitutes for all symbols except the dumplings.

Hold the Spin

This is triggered by landing six dumplings on the base game. Each dumpling has a value written on it which is either a specific monetary value between 0.5 and 5x your bet, a jackpot value or the word ‘Multi’.

When you land six dumplings, the values on those dumplings carry over to the bonus. However, the dumpling itself drops to the lowest row on its specific reel. You can see in the image below, the six dumplings have dropped to the lower rows. 

The aim of the Yummy Dumplings: Hold the Spin bonus is to keep filling the bottom row of the grid. Every time you do, you will receive the cumulative value of those dumplings. 

This is where the ‘Multi’ dumplings come in. Every dumpling with the world ‘Multi’ written on it that lands in a completed bottom row, adds an extra multiplier. In the image above, the multiplier can be seen in the handing lantern (x2). This will continue to grow every time a ‘Multi’ dumpling is cleared from the bottom row. 

You can also get dumplings that contain the word Mini, Minor, Major or Grand. However, the values can only be won if the dumpling lands in a completed bottom row. 

The bonus starts with three spins and resets every time a new dumpling lands on the screen. The spins are completed when no more dumplings land within three spins.

At the top of the game grid, you will see some carved figures – a dumpling and a dragon on either side of it. As each dumpling lands on the base game, they shoot up to the top, gradually turning the dragons from wood to gold. As you can see in the image below, the dragons are half gold, half wood.

The more dumplings you land, the more gold the dragons will turn. This is what is known as a perceived progression. It gives the impression that when the dragons are fully gold, you will automatically trigger the bonus. However, the truth is, it can randomly pop at any moment.

The Heap of Dumplings feature, when triggered, will drop dumplings down from the top in order to land six on the screen. This then starts the Hold the Spin bonus automatically for you.

There’s a lot to love about the Yummy Dumplings: Hold the Spin slot game. The design and theme is original, the bonus round is fun and innovative and the graphics stand out. Add to that the decent RTP and the high max win of 10,000x and you can see why Gamzix may be on to a winner.

Just remember, the high volatility can be an issue. Although it is possible to win some nice line hits, this game is unlikely to give you regular wins.
