There’s no denying smartphones and social media have changed the way we live. From connecting us to old friends and distant relatives, to keeping us informed of the world around us, there are near infinite uses for these technologies.
But the growing trend of doing a digital detox, or a break from electronics for a pre-determined period of time, tells us people desperately need a break from being connected 24/7.
To understand how a week-long digital detox can affect an individual, we’re looking for one participant to unplug and go phone free for one week, documenting their experience along the way. We’ll provide them with a pre-paid “dumb” phone to carry for the week, as well as pay them $2,000 for their efforts.
How It Works
We’re looking for one self-diagnosed phone addict to power down and go phone free for one week. We’ll also ask them to refrain from using computers, outside what’s required for work. They will be tasked with documenting their experience by rating each day across the following categories:
- Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Evaluate how well you adapted to situations that typically rely on smartphone use (e.g., navigation, communication, scheduling). Did you find creative solutions or struggle without your device?
- Impact on Daily Routines: Assess how your daily routines were impacted. Did you experience any significant disruptions, or did you manage to maintain their usual activities without their phone?
- Social Interaction Quality: Measure the quality and quantity of your social interactions during the week. Did you engage more deeply with others, or did the lack of a phone hinder your ability to connect?
- Mindfulness and Mental Health: Consider your mindfulness and mental well-being. Did you report feeling more present, less anxious, or more relaxed without constant phone access?
- Rediscovery of Time and Hobbies: Evaluate how you used the extra time gained from being phone-free. Did you engage in new or neglected hobbies, spend more time outdoors, or experience more free time in general?
- Reflection and Personal Growth: Look for insights or lessons you gained from the experience. Did you express any desire to change your phone usage habits permanently, or did you realize something significant about your relationship with technology?
At the end of the digital detox week, our winner will submit a written report documenting their week, based on the above criteria.

Competitions are open to residents of the United States aged 18 or over, excluding employees of the Promoter, their families, agents, or anyone else professionally connected with the competition.

4. Odds
Your chance of winning is dependent on the total number of eligible entries received.
5. Prize
The prize for this contest is $2,000. Cash prizes will be paid via PayPal. There is no option for you to be paid in another way. The prizes are non-transferable and non-exchangeable.

6. Winner Selection and Notification
Entrants will be entered into a random draw to select the winners of competition prizes.
The Promoter’s decisions are final, and no correspondence shall be entered into.
